To ensure our late colleague has a fitting Police funeral, I am asking if any of his friends or ex colleagues who have any suitable stories that could be used at the funeral service. If so, please let me or our Welfare officer, Tony Imlach know, so they can be considered as part of Bob's eulogy.
Also, if anyone feels they knew Bob well enough to be able to deliver a eulogy, please do speak up.

Update by Phil Taylor 27th July 2020
I would like to take the opportunity of briefly outlining Huberts life, for those of you who were not fortunate to know this great man.
Hubert Thomas was born in 1927, in Swansea, and was 93 years old. On leaving school he first worked as in an office, and then became a fireman on the GWR locomotives. As soon as he was able he joined the Swansea Borough Police Force as Police Constable 90 (later 2110 South Wales Constabulary) Thomas. During his early days as a Police Constable, Hubert became involved in a variety of sports, which were his great passion.
He became a noted and successful body builder and won among others the following titles.
* Mr Wales 1950
* Mr Great Britain 1950
* Britain''s Perfect Man (Festival of Britain) 1951
* NABBA Body Builder of the year 1956
* NABBA Sportsman of the year 1957
He also qualified as an amateur Weight lifter instructor in 1969.
He became a volunteer lifeguard, spending most of his free time at Langland Bay. In 1987 he received the Royal Humane Society Award for saving the life of a woman who was in imminent danger of drowning in Swansea Marina.
Hubert also was a successful judo player and water polo player.
In the 1980/90's he took on a personal charity fundraising, when he raised thousands of pounds for Harefield Hospital, and Ty Hafan.
Hubert was a keen singer and initially sang with the Swansea Male Choir, and later with the Pontarddulais Male Voice choir and the Swansea Philharmonic Choir.
Hubert worked his police service mainly in uniform, but in his later years worked in the Warrants department. He once told me of the occasion when he went to Sandy Lane in Gower to execute an arrest warrant on one of the residents. At that time Sandy Lane was a collection of old war time down beaten, wooden chalets, which attracted a large amount of druggie types. On speaking to the occupant and explaining the purpose of his visit the door was slammed in his face. He ran around the back to see his target running onto the Golf course behind. After a few minutes running the man realised that Hubert was running alongside him. Hubert said to him, "How far do you intend running, because I am alright for at least five miles." The chase than came to an abrupt end, as the man gave up.

My understanding is that, as Dave's funeral was already arranged, people wishing to attend will not be turned away, (future funerals will be restricted to immediate family).
I am therefore leaving it up to individuals to decide whether or not to attend, given the current situation.
I also wish to thank everyone for the kindness shown to me at this very difficult time by serving and retired police officers, it has been humbling. I only wish Dave had known the high esteem in which he was held by so many. Thank you all. X

We regret to inform you of the death of Philip John Every. Most of you will remember Phil who was an ex Glamorgan cadet, who joined Swansea Borough police in 1968. He worked on C Group at Swansea Central. He will be remembered as a young officer, very tall and always smiling.
About 1972, Phils love of the sea got the better of him and he joined the Bermuda Police, and after a short while was posted to The Marine section, where he remained for the rest of his service, rising to the rank of Chief Inspector. I think we all had lost touch with him, but it appears he had returned to Britain to live in Horsham, no doubt close to the sea.

Life has been tough for him this past few years but he always fought to recover and keep going. An amazing man and always very proud to have been part of the Swansea police force.
I would also like to thank you for keeping in touch with dad through Narpo. He enjoyed receiving all the news. Your card with vouchers did arrive this week and that was such a kind thought. We will donate the money to one of dad's charities.

My remarkable Dad, Ernest Morgan Sanger passed away on Friday November 10th 2017 at the University Hospital Cardiff surrounded by those who loved him dearly. He lost his beloved wife Nesta on March 5th 2016 and suffered a stroke the following October.
In December 2016 he came to stay with us in Rhiwbina and after 11 months he decided to make the move a permanent one and put his Swansea home on the market. It sold immediately and on the day that the new owners moved in Dad unexpectedly passed away. His passing has left us all reeling!
He was born in 1928 in Croft House, Station Road Loughor. The eldest of 3 boys he would have been described by his mother as "adventurous". One day when he was 3 years of age he was discovered at the neighbouring primary school where he had decided to start school a year early! Later he attended Gowerton Grammar school where he was a violinist in the school orchestra and excelled at Maths and Sport. |
When he was growing up he wanted to be a pilot but at 14 years of age he joined the army cadets. He switched to the ATC at 15 and Easter 1944 he flew in a Tiger Moth without a parachute but with his cousin Owie, 200 feet over his Loughor home so that he could wave to his mother who was hanging washing on the line.
He volunteered for the RAF in 1946 and was posted to Pembroke Dock, Southampton and then Lyneham.
In 1948 he took a crash course in Law and joined the Glamorgan Police Force as a recruit at Bridgend Training college. Some 13 weeks later he took to the streets as PC 309 Sanger.
In 1953 he married his childhood sweetheart Nesta and the following year saw the birth of their first daughter and a move into a Police house in Neath.
Promotion to Sergeant came in 1959 and also the birth of daughter number two.
Port Talbot was next and then a move to Briton Ferry. The step up to Inspector came in November 1964 with a move back to traffic at Bridgend. At this time too he was asked to form and lead the South Wales Police Diving Unit. In 1966 promotion to Chief Inspector came with a move to Aberdare where the terrible Aberfan tragedy was to have a lasting effect on him.
In 1972 he became a Superintendent at the Swansea division. Three years later he was made deputy divisional commander of the traffic division and in 1979 promotion to Chief Superintendent arrived with a post at Management Services at Bridgend H. Q.
The following year, he was back in Swansea heading the Crockett 'J' Division and then he took overall command of Swansea City's policing.
He was a founder member of the West Wales Branch of the Royal Lifesaving Society.
He retired gracefully in June 1987 to concentrate on his many hobbies.
Words cannot express how much his family and friends miss his wonderful smile, words of wisdom and great sense of humour.

A short history of 'Dad'
Born in Glanamman on December 3rd 1922 to Arthur and Mari Griffiths. A second child but brought up an only child as his elder sister had died at the age of 6 months. He was named after his uncle who had been killed in action 4 years previously in Flanders.
.
He went to Llandeilo Grammar, enjoyed Maths and Geography in particular. His first language was Welsh.
At 19 years, he joined the army and served in the Middle East during WW2. His father was killed in a road accident back home three weeks after he joined up. After tours of duty in Palestine and Egypt he was demobbed after the war.
At this point he joined the Swansea Borough Police Force – number 146 later to become 2166 in the South Wales Police force. He met his wife, Margery, at the Central police station where he was lodging at the time. Margery was a baker’s daughter and used to deliver bread to the police station. (They say the way to a man’s heart ..etc?) They married in 1955 and settled in Fforestfach where he remained as a well known local ‘bobby’, earning himself the nickname ‘Dai Book and Pencil’.
To be fair, it was never something he liked to dwell on, preferring to carry out his duties with a deep sense of responsibility and pride. He had a very strong sense of what was right and wrong but equally, was very fair. He would do anything to help anyone that needed him. He would always ‘spoil’ children. (He had no patience for parents who threatened their children with ‘the policeman’ as he always said that if a child was alone and needed help, it would be a policeman or woman that they should go to). People of Fforestfach would often turn up at our house when he was off duty.
He knew where everything was in Swansea and probably where most people lived too! His shifts on point duty at Fforestfach have become renowned and many a motorist has been well and truly shouted at for holding up the works.
He was a committed family man, preferring to spend time with his wife and daughter to doing anything else. He always had time for me, his daughter, no matter what I needed to do.
Most of all, he loved our times together at Broughton in Gower. He spent many happy hours fishing with his mates and prized a decent catch, particularly if it was a bass! He taught me to fish from the rocks at an early age and we would go fishing together often, day or night.
He was exceptionally strong and had tremendous stamina. He’d keep working at heavy jobs till they were completed no matter how long it took. His first words if there was anything to be done would be ‘Can I do anything to help?’
He was so proud of his two grandchildren, Matthew and Bethany and would light up when they came into the room. They loved spending time with him as they grew up.
He looked after Margery incredibly well as she became increasingly ill and disabled in the years before her passing in 1996. He was devastated by her loss and still missed her every day even after 21 years.
I just remember him as a very generous and loving person, straight talking with no nonsense.
I am so proud to be able to call him my Dad.

The nickname Tom the Dog derives from his rescue of a stranded dog in a quarry at Short Street, Mt Pleasant Swansea in the early 1950's . He was given an award by the RSPSCA for this. As mechanical Transport officer he also regularly transported dogs from the Police Station to the Dogs Home adding to his ""Dog"nickname.
He was extremely versatile in various crafts such as bricklaying, carpentry, decorating and many officers utilised his skills at their homes. His expertise was also used by the Swansea Force in painting No Waitings Signs etc and unofficially correcting small police vehicle scrapes!
Tom had a wicked sense of humour and was well known for his pranks. he always had twinkle in his eye and every officer who worked with him has a story to tell involving him. He was a character loved by all a very able "rough diamond" who will be greatly missed.

I regret to have to inform members of the death earlier today of Ret.Supt. Michael PETT of "Pant Derwen", 21, Sycamore Close, Litchard, Bridgend, CF31 1QS, after a short illness.
He leaves a wife, Betty, a son Richard (who is a serving officer with SWP), daughters Caroline and Joanne, grandchildren and great-grand-children. |
Mike's Police service was varied, but most of his service was connected to the Traffic department in various ranks, along with spells on CID at Bridgend, The Driving School, and towards the end of his service he was Supt in-charge of the Traffic Department out of HQ/Treforest. He retired from Bridgend Town as Supt. there.
One of Mike's great interests was in Bee-keeping, which he managed to incorporate into his policing roll on many instances. Mike and Betty continued bee-keeping into his retirement and anyone visiting one of the local shows would have come across them selling the honey and sharing his great knowledge of bee-keeping to anyone who showed an interest. He was a qualified swimming instructor and taught many to swim during his working life and well into his retirement.

The following information has been received from the Executor.
It is with great sadness that Jude's family and I announce that on Monday 16th March 2015 Jude passed away at the Marie Curie Hospice in Penarth after a short illness.
The funeral will be held at Thornhill Crematorium on Thursday 2nd April 2015 at 10:15am Changed
At Jude's request, would any attendees please refrain from wearing black and if possible to instead wear something lime green. No flowers would be required, however should anyone wish to contribute in any way, Jude had requested that donations be made to the Sunnyvale Cat Rescue in Wenvoe. There will be a collection box at the funeral for anyone wishing to make such a donation.
As Jude was not religious, she requested a non-religious 'service' and therefore the funeral will be relatively short. Therefore, should anyone wish to say a few words, a small number of people would be welcome to do so and should contact me at the email address below so an order of service can be arranged. Additionally, should anyone wish to submit any written tributes or the like, these would also be welcomed and can be read out by the small number of people who will speak. Again, please use the email address below for this purpose.
